Victoria Sackville-West - Leopards at Knole

Victoria Sackville-West - Leopards at Knole

Leopards on the gable-ends, br Leopards on the painted stair, br Stiff the blazoned shield they bear, br Or and gules, a bend of vair, br Leopards on the gable-ends, br Leopards everywhere. br br Guard and vigil in the night br While the ancient house is sleeping br They three hundred years are keeping, br Nightly from their stations leaping, br Shadows black in moonlight bright, br Roof to gable creeping. br br Rigid when the day returns, br Up aloft in sun or rain br Leopards at their posts again br Watch the shifting pageant's train; br And their jewelled colour burns br In the window-pane. br br Often on the painted stair, br As I passed abstractedly, br Velvet footsteps, two and three, br Padded gravely after me. br - There was nothing, nothing there, br Nothing there to see.
