Eugene Field - Lady button-eyes

Eugene Field - Lady button-eyes

When the busy day is done, br And my weary little one br Rocketh gently to and fro; br When the night winds softly blow, br And the crickets in the glen br Chirp and chirp and chirp again; br When upon the haunted green br Fairies dance around their queen - br Then from yonder misty skies br Cometh Lady Button-Eyes. br br Through the murk and mist and gloam br To our quiet, cozy home, br Where to singing, sweet and low, br Rocks a cradle to and fro; br Where the clock's dull monotone br Telleth of the day that's done; br Where the moonbeams hover o'er br Playthings sleeping on the floor - br Where my weary wee one lies br Cometh Lady Button-Eyes. br br Cometh like a fleeting ghost br From some distant eerie coast; br Never footfall can you hear br As that spirit fareth near - br Never whisper, never word br From that shadow-queen is heard. br In ethereal raiment dight, br From the realm of fay and sprite br In the depth of yonder skies br Cometh Lady Button-Eyes. br br Layeth she her hands upon br My dear weary little one, br And those white hands overspread br Like a veil the curly head, br Seem to fondle and caress br Every little silken tress; br Then she smooths the eyelids down br Over those two eyes of brown - br In such soothing, tender wise br Cometh Lady Button-Eyes.
