Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - Longing

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - Longing

WHAT pulls at my heart so? br br What tells me to roam? br What drags me and lures me br br From chamber and home? br How round the cliffs gather br br The clouds high in air! br I fain would go thither, br br I fain would be there! br br The sociable flight br br Of the ravens comes back; br I mingle amongst them, br br And follow their track. br Round wall and round mountain br br Together we fly; br She tarries below there, br br I after her spy. br br Then onward she wanders, br br My flight I wing soon br To the wood fill'd with bushes, br br A bird of sweet tune. br She tarries and hearkens, br br And smiling, thinks she: br "How sweetly he's singing! br br He's singing to me!" br br The heights are illum'd br br By the fast setting sun; br The pensive fair maiden br br Looks thoughtfully on; br She roams by the streamlet, br br O'er meadows she goes, br And darker and darker br br The pathway fast grows.
