Rudyard Kipling - The Hymn to Physical Pain

Rudyard Kipling - The Hymn to Physical Pain

Dread Mother of Forgetfulness br Who, when Thy reign begins, br Wipest away the Soul's distress, br And memory of her sins. br br The trusty Worm that dieth not-- br The steadfast Fire also, br By Thy contrivance are forgot br In a completer woe. br br Thine are the lidless eyes of night br That stare upon our tears, br Through certain hours which in our sight br Exceed a thousand years: br br Thine is the thickness of the Dark br That presses in our pain, br As Thine the Dawn that bids us mark br Life's grinning face again. br br Thine is the weariness outworn br No promise shall relieve, br That says at eve, "Would God 'twere morn" br At morn, "Would God 'twere eve!" br br And when Thy tender mercies cease br And life unvexed is due, br Instant upon the false release br The Worm and Fire renew.
