Emily Pauline Johnson - Re-voyage

Emily Pauline Johnson - Re-voyage

What of the days when we two dreamed together? br Days marvellously fair, br As lightsome as a skyward floating feather br Sailing on summer air-- br Summer, summer, that came drifting through br Fate's hand to me, to you. br br What of the days, my dear? I sometimes wonder br If you too wish this sky br Could be the blue we sailed so softly under, br In that sun-kissed July; br Sailed in the warm and yellow afternoon, br With hearts in touch and tune. br br Have you no longing to re-live the dreaming, br Adrift in my canoe? br To watch my paddle blade all wet and gleaming br Cleaving the waters through? br To lie wind-blown and wave-caressed, until br Your restless pulse grows still? br br Do you not long to listen to the purling br Of foam athwart the keel? br To hear the nearing rapids softly swirling br Among their stones, to feel br The boat's unsteady tremor as it braves br The wild and snarling waves? br br What need of question, what of your replying? br Oh! well I know that you br Would toss the world away to be but lying br Again in my canoe, br In listless indolence entranced and lost, br Wave-rocked, and passion tossed. br br Ah me! my paddle failed me in the steering br Across love's shoreless seas; br All reckless, I had ne'er a thought of fearing br Such dreary days as these, br When through the self-same rapids we dash by, br My lone canoe and I.
