Louisa Stuart Costello - Song of the Crew of Diaz

Louisa Stuart Costello - Song of the Crew of Diaz

On the Discovery of the Cape of Good Hope, br or Cape of Storms br br br Where no sound was ever heard br But the ocean's hollow roar, br As it breaks, in foamy mountains, br Along the rugged shore: br br Where ev'ry wind of heaven br That has terror on its wings, br Howls to the startled echo br That through each cavern rings: br br br Upon that world of waters, br Where nought has ever pass'd br But the storm-bird's glittering pinions, br As it whirls amidst the blast— br br br Where no sail has ever wandered br Beneath that troubled sky, br Frowns the stately Cape of Storms br O'er the drear immensity! br br br Above whose hoary summit, br Where captive thunders sleep, br Three huge black clouds for ever br Their dreadful station keep. br br br We have gazed on what no other br Has ever gazed upon— br We have braved the angry spirits, br And our victory is won. br br br We have conquered all the dangers br Of a yet unfathom'd sea; br And we bring the prize of glory.
