Gilbert Keith Chesterton - The Road to Roundabout

Gilbert Keith Chesterton - The Road to Roundabout

Some say that Guy of Warwick br The man that killed the Cow, br And brake the mighty Boar alive br Beyond the bridge at Slough; br Went up against a Loathly Worm br That wasted all the Downs, br And so the roads they twist and squirm br (If a may be allowed the term) br From the writhing of the stricken Worm br That died in seven towns. br I see no scientific proof br That this idea is sound, br And I should say they wound about br To find the town of Roundabout, br The merry town of Roundabout, br That makes the world go round. br br Some say that Robin Goodfellow, br Whose lantern lights the meads br (To steal a phrase Sir Walter Scott br In heaven no longer needs), br Such dance around the trysting-place br The moonstruck lover leads; br Which superstition I should scout br There is more faith in honest doubt br (As Tennyson has pointed out) br Than in those nasty creeds. br But peace and righteousness (St John) br In Roundabout can kiss, br And since that's all that's found about br The pleasant town of Roundabout, br The roads they simply bound about br To find out where it is. br br Some say that when Sir Lancelot br Went forth to find the Grail, br Grey Merlin wrinkled up the roads br For hope that he would fail; br All roads lead back to Lyonesse br And Camelot in the Vale, br I cannot yield assent to this br Extravagant hypothesis, br The plain, shrewd Briton will dismiss br Such rumours (Daily Mail). br But in the streets of Roundabout br Are no such factions found, br Or theories to expound about, br Or roll upon the ground about, br In the happy town of Roundabout, br That makes the world go round.
