William Schwenck Gilbert - The Ape and the Lady

A LADY fair, of lineage high, br Was loved by an Ape, in the days gone by - br The Maid was radiant as the sun, br The Ape was a most unsightly one - br So it would not do - br His scheme fell through; br For the Maid, when his love took formal shape, br Expressed such terror br At his monstrous error, br That he stammered an apology and made his 'scape, br The picture of a disconcerted Ape. br br With a view to rise in the social scale, br He shaved his bristles, and he docked his tail, br He grew moustachios, and he took his tub, br And he paid a guinea to a toilet club.
