Lord Alfred Douglas - Sonnet on the Sonnet

Lord Alfred Douglas - Sonnet on the Sonnet

To see the moment holds a madrigal, br To find some cloistered place, some hermitage br For free devices, some deliberate cage br Wherein to keep wild thoughts like birds in thrall; br To eat sweet honey and to taste black gall, br To fight with form, to wrestle and to rage, br Till at the last upon the conquered page br The shadows of created Beauty fall. br br This is the sonnet, this is all delight br Of every flower that blows in every Spring, br And all desire of every desert place; br This is the joy that fills a cloudy night br When bursting from her misty following, br A perfect moon wins to an empty space.
