Rabindranath Tagore - The Gardener XXVIII: Your Questioning Eyes

Rabindranath Tagore - The Gardener XXVIII: Your Questioning Eyes

Your questioning eyes are sad. They br seek to know my meaning as the moon br would fathom the sea. br I have bared my life before your br eyes from end to end, with nothing br hidden or held back. That is why you br know me not. br If it were only a gem, I could break br it into a hundred pieces and string br them into a chain to put on your neck. br If it were only a flower, round and br small and sweet, I could pluck it from br its stem to set it in your hair. br But it is a heart, my beloved. br Where are its shores and its bottom? br You know not the limits of this br kingdom, still you are its queen. br If it were only a moment of pleasure br it would flower in an easy smile, and br you could see it and read it in a br moment. br If it were merely a pain it would br melt in limpid tears, reflecting its br inmost secret without a word. br But it is love, my beloved. br Its pleasure and pain are boundless, br and endless its wants and wealth. br It is as near to you as your life, but br you can never wholly know it.
