Rabindranath Tagore - The Gardener XLIV: Reverend Sir, Forgive

Rabindranath Tagore - The Gardener XLIV: Reverend Sir, Forgive

Reverend sir, forgive this pair of br sinners. Spring winds to-day are br blowing in wild eddies, driving dust br and dead leaves away, and with them br your lessons are all lost. br Do not say, father, that life is a br vanity. br For we have made truce with death br for once, and only for a few fragrant br hours we two have been made immortal. br Even if the king's army came and br fiercely fell upon us we should sadly br shake our heads and say, Brothers, br you are disturbing us. If you must br have this noisy game, go and clatter br your arms elsewhere. Since only for br a few fleeting moments we have been br made immortal. br If friendly people came and flocked br around us, we should humbly bow to br them and say, This extravagant good br fortune is an embarrassment to us. br Room is scarce in the infinite sky br where we dwell. For in the spring- br time flowers come in crowds, and the br busy wings of bees jostle each other. br Our little heaven, where dwell only br we two immortals, is too absurdly br narrow.
