Rabindranath Tagore - The Gardener XIV: I Was Walking by the Road

I was walking by the road, I do not br know why, when the noonday was past br and bamboo branches rustled in the br wind. br The prone shadows with their out- br stretched arms clung to the feet of br the hurrying light. br The koels were weary of their br songs. br I was walking by the road, I do not br know why. br The hut by the side of the water is br shaded by an overhanging tree. br Some on was busy with her work, br and her bangles made music in the br corner. br I stood before this hut, I know not br why. br The narrow winding road crosses br many a mustard field, and many a br mango forest. br It passes by the temple of the br village and the market at the river br landing-place. br I stopped by this hut, I do not know br why. br Years ago it was a day of breezy br March when the murmur of the spring br was languorous, and mango blossoms br were dropping on the dust. br The rippling water leapt and licked br the brass vessel that stood on the br landing-step. br I think of that day of breezy March, br I do not know why. br Shadows are deepening and cattle br returning to their folds. br The light is grey upon the lonely br meadows, and the villagers are waiting br for the ferry at the bank. br I slowly return upon my steps, I br do not know why.
