Innokenty Fedorovich Annensky - Bow and Strings

Innokenty Fedorovich Annensky - Bow and Strings

What heavy, dark delirium! br What dim and moonlit heights! br To touch the violin for years br And not to know the strings by light! br br Who needs us now? And who lit up br Two hollow, melancholy faces... br And suddenly the bow felt br Someone take them up, unite them. br br "How long it's been! Amidst this gloom br Just tell me this: are you still the same?" br The strings caressed the bow, br Rang out, caressed it slightly trembling. br br "Is it not true, that we will never more br Be parted. It's enough..." br Yes, replied the violin, br But pain was throbbing in her heart. br br The bow discerned it and grew mute, br The echo still continued in the violin... br What was a torture to them both br The people heard as music. br br But the violinist didn't snuff br The candles out 'til dawn...The strings sang on... br The sun found them worn out br On the black velvet of their bed.
