Dame Mary Gilmore - Singapore

Dame Mary Gilmore - Singapore

They grouped together about the chief br And each one looked at his mate, br Ashamed to think that Australian men br Should meet such bitter fate! br And black was the wrath in each hot heart br And savage oaths they swore br As they thought of how they had all been ditched br By "Impregnable" Singapore. br br In her vaunted place she squatted the sea br On a base that was Maginot bred br Her startled face looked up at the skies br To the enemy planes o'erhead. br Enemy planes; while ours were - where? br That cry we had heard before br Our hearts were wrung as it rose this time br From beleaguered Singapore. br br She brought forth death as her eldest child br With defeat as her second son. br Then she hung a white flag out on a staff br To show that her task was done. br And sick with rage the Australians stood, br And God! how those Anzacs swore - br Bennett and all his men alike - br At the fall of Singapore.
