Thomas Montague Traherne - An Hymn upon St. Bartholomew's Day

What powerful Spirit lives within! br What active Angel doth inhabit here! br What heavenly light inspires my skin, br Which doth so like a Deity appear! br A living Temple of all ages, I br Within me see br A Temple of Eternity! br All Kingdoms I descry br In me. br br An inward Omnipresence here br Mysteriously like His within me stands, br Whose knowledge is a Sacred Sphere br That in itself at once includes all lands. br There is some Angel that within me can br Both talk and move, br And walk and fly and see and love, br A man on earth, a man br Above. br br Dull walls of clay my Spirit leaves, br And in a foreign Kingdom doth appear, br This great Apostle it receives, br Admires His works and sees them, standing here, br Within myself from East to West I move br As if I were br At once a Cherubim and Sphere, br Or was at once above br And here. br br The Soul’s a messenger whereby br Within our inward Temple we may be br Even like the very Deity br In all the parts of His Eternity.
