Louise Gluck - Happiness

Louise Gluck - Happiness

A man and a woman lie on a white bed. br It is morning. I think br Soon they will waken. br On the bedside table is a vase br of lilies; sunlight br pools in their throats. br I watch him turn to her br as though to speak her name br but silently, deep in her mouth-- br At the window ledge, br once, twice, br a bird calls. br And then she stirs; her body br fills with his breath. br br I open my eyes; you are watching me. br Almost over this room br the sun is gliding. br Look at your face, you say, br holding your own close to me br to make a mirror. br How calm you are. And the burning wheel br passes gently over us.
