Wystan Hugh Auden - Seascape

Look, stranger, at this island now br The leaping light for your delight discovers, br Stand stable here br And silent be, br That through the channels of the ear br May wander like a river br The swaying sound of the sea. br br Here at the small field's ending pause br Where the chalk wall falls to the foam, and its tall ledges br Oppose the pluck br And knock of the tide, br And the shingle scrambles after the suck- br ing surf, br and the gull lodges br A moment on its sheer side. br br Far off like floating seeds the ships br Diverge on urgent voluntary errands; br And the full view br Indeed may enter br And move in memory as now these clouds do, br That pass the harbour mirror br And all the summer through the water saunter.
