Wystan Hugh Auden - Nocturne

Wystan Hugh Auden - Nocturne

Now through night's caressing grip br Earth and all her oceans slip, br Capes of China slide away br From her fingers into day br And th'Americas incline br Coasts towards her shadow line. br br Now the ragged vagrants creep br Into crooked holes to sleep: br Just and unjust, worst and best, br Change their places as they rest: br Awkward lovers like in fields br Where disdainful beauty yields: br br While the splendid and the proud br Naked stand before the crowd br And the losing gambler gains br And the beggar entertains: br May sleep's healing power extend br Through these hours to our friend. br Unpursued by hostile force, br Traction engine, bull or horse br Or revolting succubus; br Calmly till the morning break br Let him lie, then gently wake.
