Alan Seeger - The Old Lowe House, Staten Island

Another prospect pleased the builder's eye, br And Fashion tenanted (where Fashion wanes) br Here in the sorrowful suburban lanes br When first these gables rose against the sky. br Relic of a romantic taste gone by, br This stately monument alone remains, br Vacant, with lichened walls and window-panes br Blank as the windows of a skull. But I, br On evenings when autumnal winds have stirred br In the porch-vines, to this gray oracle br Have laid a wondering ear and oft-times heard, br As from the hollow of a stranded shell, br Old voices echoing (or my fancy erred) br Things indistinct, but not insensible.
