Alan Seeger - Sonnet XIII

Alan Seeger - Sonnet XIII

I fancied, while you stood conversing there, br Superb, in every attitude a queen, br Her ermine thus Boadicea bare, br So moved amid the multitude Faustine. br My life, whose whole religion Beauty is, br Be charged with sin if ever before yours br A lesser feeling crossed my mind than his br Who owning grandeur marvels and adores. br Nay, rather in my dream-world's ivory tower br I made your image the high pearly sill, br And mounting there in many a wistful hour, br Burdened with love, I trembled and was still, br Seeing discovered from that azure height br Remote, untrod horizons of delight.
