I am haplessly entrenched near a road, br Bogged down by the war's heavy load. br Then as I view the skirmish ahead, br My mind is overcome with a dread. br br I can not envision what lies beyond, br That curve, that field, that placid pond. br Will I encounter bloodshed, captivity and tears, br Or will I overcome my deeply rooted fears? br br Will I feel pain and anxiety within my frame, br Or charge with a vengeance leading to fame? br I grit my teeth, knit my brow and groan, br When suddenly I realize I was not alone. br br There beside me was a fearless friend, br A friend on whom I can trust and depend, br To lead me into battle whatever betides, br I smile with confidence and then follow him - my guide.br br Joseph T.
