Herbert Nehrlich - My Old Schoolmate

Herbert Nehrlich - My Old Schoolmate

A friend from overseas, br one who was half forgotten, br came for a visit just today, br to reminisce and see koalas. br I had occasion to observe br him freshening and take a shave br in front of our steamed up mirror, br and he remarked that olden times br remember when we used to, well. br He started yapping as he used to br just over 50 years ago at home. br Yes I remembered well our pranks, br the turds we laid in school loudspeaker, br the powdered Glauber Salt for tea br that made the teachers run at last. br The hazy, though acute reflection br had given me some food for thought br but when we sat with our friend Jack br and sipped the memories back down br it did occur to me that he, in truth, br had aged so much that it was doubtful br he was the friend I'd left behind. br So, c'est la vie I mumbled loudly, br creation knows no decency. br Next morning when he shaved again br I peeked in quickly, did confirm br and my elation made me glow br how lucky can a person get? br Then I was beeped and had to go br he said 'you put on some condition', br patting my belly, then he added br 'well face it, we're old geezers now'. br I have a beard and never shave br and therefore have no need to look br into a steamed up lying mirror br and, well I do recall the days, br when that old geezer was still young, br he always did exaggerate.
