Richard George - Halcyon And After

Richard George - Halcyon And After

It was May or June, I met you: br br br Business, something or other. br Your study, when you showed me in br Was full of the sun, drenched with gold: br From work strewn across tables, chairs br You turned to me and smiled - br And I was dazzled. br You made me tea with bergamot br And we talked and talked, all the things br Our loved ones dare not hear. br br At last, when I stood up to go br I saw your eyes diving back, br Sad and wise, into shafts of light br And I thought: 'She is the one. br I can tell her anything'. br br But humid grey clouded the sun br That day your skirt revealed your legs: br I stared too long. br Your smile became a laugh br And you sheathed your tongue. br From then on, we were colleagues. br br The night I saw you last br I walked you home half way: br We practised conversation, br Venturing nothing. br Suddenly, you slipped from my side: br I watched you walk to your future br Through summer dark and street lights, br May and June, another year.
