Michael Shepherd - 0176 Letter to a Well-known Contemporary Poet

I wanted to write to you about your poems, br that is, about something I couldn't quite put my finger on br so I didn't write in case it sounded inconsequential br and it's silly to write to a poet who handles words so expertly, br inconsequentially.. br br Inconsequential. That's it. I appreciate that you want to stress br life's inconsequentiality - this happens, that happens, but br we're none the wiser - that's a modern concern, I appreciate, br no neat wrapping life up with a brisk end-rhyme... br br but how can I put this tactfully, inconsequentiality br or is it tangentiality br can seem to the reader eager to extract meaning br that is, the poet's meaning, as near as can be... br inconsequentiality can seem...obscure... br for this very reason, since it's difficult br to share the same inconsequentiality br if you see what I mean br br and this unintentional obscurity br can sometimes seem br of course I know you wouldn't br but let's say to an uninformed superficial reader - br like pretension? br br I hope you don't mind my mentioning this br it's only because I do admire your writing so much br and I know that the prizes and awards you've won br proves that no-one could possibly accuse you of pretension br it's just that I thought I should say how it seems br to a very ordinary reader. I hope you will read this br in the spirit it's meant. And I do look forward br very much to reading your next book br now the library stocks them.
