Ian Ayres - The Masseuse's Son

Ian Ayres - The Masseuse's Son

His mom’s client hurried naked from her room br Aroused, proof she’d been doing more than massage br Or massaging more than backs as if to confront br All the petty people brought up by petty people br Who believe what they believe without questioning br The night a nine-year-old boy was shoved into a pool br Of his mother’s blood and towels thrown at him br To clean it up clean it all up don’t leave a trace br The blood dripping from between her palms br br Her rocking back and forth naked on the edge br The boy at her bare feet, a beauty mark his focus br Her toenails painted the color the towels became br Her hands muffling the words, “Don’t let it stain…” br The boy’s sisters and baby brother crying behind him br Feeling he’s the eldest and should kill the latest br “Dad” whose fist they saw pounding her nose br Yet love pervades and turns blood into blossoms br Fragrant next to her bed where she rocked br br Her perfume was all that caressed him br After she’d left for yet another night br The boy dreamed of becoming more br More than he’d held in with her blood br He didn’t know this planet would not last br Refused to get lost in other illusions br Her blood had blossomed on his hands br Red roses had filled her room br And her bed lay gaping.
