Linda Hepner - Squirrel Thief

Squirrel br br When God said: br There’s a tree whose fruit you may not eat, br The lion said, br No problem I shall just eat meat; br And God agreed: br Consider it my special treat. br br The rabbit said br I’ll stick to grass br The robin sang br I’ll peck at seeds br The butterfly: br I think I’ll pass br The tortoise huffed br I’ll chomp at weeds; br The whale: br Crowds of brill are great, br The dinosaur… br Who knows his fate? br And body lice br Could pick and choose, br Then last, we Jews! br We read the list of don’ts and does br And offers we could not refuse br Like veggies, clean of course, and nuts br And berries, fruit and the best cuts br Of cows and sheep and… let’s not dwell br On flesh or fish or living creatures br Who share with us most genes and features. br br But damn! the squirrel with his tail, br His cloven paws, his pointy ears, br Pretending to be cute, sets sail br Across the aeons to our years br Where in our garden grows a tree br Of peaches, succulent, sweet tears, br Bending each branch abundantly – br And like the worst of thieves, comes out br In brightest mornings, just to flout br Defiant joy and quickly steals br The fruit of God. br But no appeals! br For no one traps the devil, he br Comes visiting at will. br The tree br Grows understanding at its best. br The squirrel robs us in our nest br And when God says: Now taste the peach! br There’s nothing left to taste br Or teach. br br LRH br 7.3.
