Michael Shepherd - unicorn 7

Michael Shepherd - unicorn 7

This forest glade, mossy, silent underfoot, br shaft of sunlight catching the quivering flight of woodland moths, br tempts even the shyest, slender deer br whose slightest nostril twitch, reveals a whole forest’s map; br the crackle of a single twig, a disappearing, graceful leap; br yet even the deer graze undisturbed br when in a thought’s space, that creature’s there; br for not proximity but presence, is what they share; br each, in peace, moves in the other’s presence; br this we know as peace. br br and on the high hills where the air is ever on the move, br the eagle, circling like the first navigator br of the globe – yet seeing so much more – br glances undisturbed; with knowledge, and love, too, that’s beyond br family, or prey, when that strange, familiar white creature br with flowing mane, prances, canters, into sight; their presence shared br so far apart; so near. br br and in the foamy waves, the dolphins leap and sport br around it, as that creature, open-mouthed as if in joy, br shakes from its wet and glorious mane br the salty drops of water, while the dolphins br speak to it in a language beyond beauty’s sound – br br so this noble creature in its turn br undisturbed by those to whom it shows itself br beyond all perturbations of the world; br detached, yet gives itself to all; br br Orpheus, or unicorn, or Muse – br to be led by such a creature, joyously, br knowing nothing of the where or here or there br but trust – this the poetry of the world.
