Herbert Nehrlich - ...Not Far From The Tree

An apple bored to just be hanging br had tried, through frequent heavy banging br to cut himself loose from the tree, br he wanted also to be free, br as some of his esteemed round friends br had fallen down near the old fence. br br To no avail were here his tries br only the wind did hear his cries, br and on a day with heavy cloud br it started whistling rather loud br and swept through all the orchard trees br dislodged some hives of honey bees br and nudged the apple of his stem br thus he fell down and laughed at them. br br 'You stupid apples, are you plotting br your great escape or are you rotting br I see that you are resting now br on muddy ground, don't you know how br to look after your apple skin br you must preserve it well to grin br and as you know no apple sells br if he looks wrinkled, even smells.' br br The apple who had fallen last br then tried to roll but was aghast br he could not move at all down here br it gave him one big dose of fear. br br While trying to make up a plan br a rather big and heavy man br came up to them with muslim bag br he gave each apple its own tag br and soon they all were sealed inside br the farmer took them for a ride. br br The farmer's kids came running out br (the wife was making sauerkraut) , br they looked at all the apples now br the youngest one said 'Daddy, wow, br it did not take you long to get br these apples and I think I'd bet br that you did climb a big old tree.' br br 'Oh no, a big old tree, not me, br you kids must learn that not a one br can walk or shuffle, fly or run, br an apple always tends to be br right where he falls, close to the tree.
