Russel Tanner - Echo and Narcissus

Russel Tanner - Echo and Narcissus

Zeus’ tendency from home to wander br Caused Hera, his wife, to start to wonder br If he could possibly be seeing another br No! He must have eyes for no other br br One day, secretly she did follow him out br Into the woods; what a lout! br That cheating god had done it again br From the nymph’s friendships he stood to gain br br In order to allow Zeus to escape br Echo to Hera a long untrue tale did relate br In the time Echo used to spin a yarn br Zeus ran off: darn! br br When Hera finally caught on br She was so angry, so woebegone br She cursed Echo, so she could only repeat br The last words mentioned by others, no major feat br br Echo wandered the land, traveled far and wide br Repeating the last words of others, well-said or snide br She saw no way out of her mess br You cannot expect favour from a furious goddess br br Once, a handsome young man she did spy br Narcissus by name, wiry and spry br Wanting, but unable, to say how she loved him br She followed him everywhere; now that’s acting slightly dim! br br As soon as he was thirsty, he looked for a pool br He found one quickly, to the brim it was full br To his own reflection he did lose his heart br From it he just simply would not part br br Now Echo pines, then fades away br Narcissus never notices her as his mind will not stray br From the image in the water which he would not leave br When only the voice of Echo is left, he ceases to live br br Into the Narcissus flower he did turn br Still his love for his reflection does burn br While Echo passes time repeating what others what others say br He stares at his reflection the whole daybr br Russel Tannerbr br
