Alive, full of life - - br laughing at jokes, I imagine, br grooving to the music on the radio br 20 miles from his destination - - br Can't wait, can't wait to get home br br But, he's dead now, finally lying, br spread-eagled on the road br not yet cold br br And all I see are old black shoes, br shoes pointing my way br and a blanket-covered body br (so small... so young) br as our car, lavish with life, glides by br br I've never seen a fresh-dead person br Never seen someone whose br last moment in life, first in death br br caused so much confusion br (why are we not moving?) br anger (WHY are we still not moving? !) br then, bitter tears for the loss br (Oh, God......) br br Rescue workers wandered alone, br foiled, forlorn, unfulfilled in the mission br to quicken the dead br br He was alive, so alive, only br moments ago... like you, like me br full of plans, full of life, full of self - - br empty now, dead body on the road br Does he know that it only took a moment? ... br br br (4.18.06 - On the long drive to Disney World, of all places. So very sad.
