Sojourner Kincaid Rolle - To Thine Own Flame Be True

To Thine Own Flame Be True br br There is a place in all our breasts br where we hold our truest treasures. br Our love for ourselves and for all of our kind br and the virtues by which we are measured. br br We begin with the grain that continuously binds br We end with the wheat of our harvest. br We remember our sisters who emblazon our path; br whose flames burn throughout the forest. br br Symbolic sisters envisioning their dreams. br Each striding forth from disparate abodes. br Each singing bravely her own heartsong. br Each stepping onto the grand road. br br From each separate singing, br a separate choir petitioned. br Some sang for freedom from fear and oppression. br Some sang for equal conditions. br br In each of their hearts no matter the verse, br a flame gleamed  glorious in hue br Its light on the land diminished the dark. br The dream of the women stood true. br br That their brothers and sisters, br their dissidents and their esteemed br might mingle  touching shoulder to shoulder br and together walk into the stream. br br Today we stand to remember our sisters br and the honor which to us they have given. br br We see the stars, the trails they have blazed br the strength that  flows from their light. br br We continue to sing the dissonant songs br Some want to be equal - some want to be free. br br We continue toward the great promised state br We continue to carry the vision. br br We continue to stride toward justice and peace br infusing the whole world with our mission. br br We carry the torch in our common cache br Flaming  brilliantly blue on the path.
