Pete Crowther - Gaping Ghyll

Pete Crowther - Gaping Ghyll

Wet walls of rock enclose br a caverned space — earth’s womb br wherein we wander like br lost souls in exile br from our sunlit world above. br Here chthonic gods and goddesses br of darkness rule. There is no sky br but far away and high above, br faint daylight from the surface br filters through the cracks br and chimneys in the roof. br The only sound down here br is trickling water and the br crash and splash of three tall waterfalls br that fall so fast br through all the emptiness of this br great cavern underground. They say br it is so vast, a whole br cathedral could be lost br and swallowed up within its maw. br Before these towering walls br and buttresses of rock, as old br as time, I feel a need br to kneel, for never before, br in any cathedral made by man, br have I felt such a br terrible sense of religious awe.
