Lee Degnan - Christmas Tears

Lee Degnan - Christmas Tears

'Christmas cheer br is not found here, br children, we are too poor. br What's left instead, br moldy and stale bread, br and no fancy wreaths on our door. br We'll have no tree br but something came to me br and it'll cure those blues of yours.' br Then Mother took lights, br and at tree height, br afixed them from ceiling to floor br Criss-crossed and V-ed br yes, it turned out to be br the most beautiful tree evermore... br And with that act, br I knew for a fact, br Mother deserved to be adored! br br Then Father came in br reeking of his gin br looked upon this and was floored! br His face ghastly, br turned bitter and nasty, br Christmas lights from the wall he tore br 'I'll have none of this! ' br and he said with a hiss, br 'Woman, you are a stupid wh*re.' br And he left a mess br kinda like us, I guess br as we all cried of Christmas's of yore br Still, as Mother was blue br She said, 'This was meant for you' br And the lights went on the wall once more br She said, 'Don't hate, br Father's anger will abate... br He is only sad that we are so poor.' br br This happened to be, br Christmas of 1983, br the saddest of that I am sure. br But what I've learned... br love given is love returned br and happiness is something to fight for.
