Michael Shepherd - 0008 The Gift

Michael Shepherd - 0008 The Gift

Who does not wish to give the perfect gift br to those we love – to whom we have already br given the greatest gift we have – our heart? br To choose a visible and outward sign br of love whose meaning’s inward, spiritual? br br But who would dare to challenge innocence br and ignorance in their demonic bond, br and break the spell of Christmas wish and hope br by telling children, that old Santa Claus br is but the God who gave their life to them - br dressed up in red and white and snowy beard; br and who, in needing nothing of himself, br would be delighted to receive their thanks br and nothing more; and who, we might believe br of one who has all gifts in his command, br might be obliged by those laws he himself br created, out of justice, equity, br to give them that which they themselves have made – br a life of gratitude for life itself – br a life of praise, where all the world is gift br beyond all human gifts? br br What parents now br might give their children gold, myrrh, frankincense br with all their love; and teach them by this show br why Christmas gifts are godly metaphor? br br Of course, no parents would dare break this spell; br you’ll laugh at me for this absurdity; br yet it might build a clear-eyed, praising race br who thought in metaphor; spoke poetry.
