jerry hughes - Bleak House

I used to pass it on my way to school, br an eerie place with a tumbled-down fence br and gates that groaned on windy days. br br Around its terraces gargoyles leered br at passers-by in stoney silence. br Ivy wrapped the house in a green cocoon br and the curtains were always drawn. br br A crone lived there they said - died long ago, br but I'll swear I saw her framed by a window br dressed in crinoline and lace. br br A Gainsborough lady of such exquisite beauty br she took my breath away. br Such are the fantasies of an adolescent boy br on the threshold of pubescence.
