Theodora (Theo) Onken - Georgia Country Store

Mama said she saw you- br At the general Store- br Said you came swinin' through- br That ole dusty screen door. br br Fireflys and gadflys following. br Filling a handbasket with- br Apricot preserves and bakery biscuits- br A dozen eggs and a handful of grits. br br You hurried, mama said- br Back into the heat drenched afternoon. br Humidity of early Georgia swelter. br Your footsteps home melted the concrete walkway. br br Flower's and weed's withering- br Dying of the semi-drought- br Sorta like jelly beans melting upon the kids- br On Sundays after church when everyone - br Was dressed Sunday best but soaked all about- br For a hot Fellowship meal but the thick air always won out! br br All that survived were the Magnolia tree's. br They like the humidity and rain.
