asma bahrainwala - ****** Realization (A Story)

A dying bird br Once confided in me. br She bemoaned her terrible fate br And told me how it came to be. br br She said, “Not too far back in time, br I took my maiden flight. br I flew and flew and flew br Till I reached a great height. br br I soared quite high br In the vast blue sky br And never sensed any fear br That my death would be so near. br br Day by day, br My confidence grew. br I took to my wings br And flew and flew and flew. br br My instinct did caution me – br That I should not be so carefree br That I should restrict my flight br That I should not cross the familiar precincts. br br But a young bird I was, br Keen to discover new lands, br Ever ready to push off the limits, br And experience freedom to the fullest. br br One day, I entered an exotic stretch. br My joy knew no bounds. br It was the most beautiful landscape – br A glimpse of heaven on earth, as they say. br br The beauty intoxicated me. br I was in a state of ecstatic bliss. br I was so blinded by my overwhelming joy br That I failed to notice the ploy. br br Beauty served as the bait. br I was at the mercy of my fate. br Lured by the promising land, br I descended a little to see it close at hand. br br Suddenly, an arrow shot from the hunter’s bow br Pierced right through my heart. br I fell down with a thud, br Bleeding streams of red.” br br Yes, yes I saw what transpired. br At that moment, br I was close by. br I saw the poor bird wreathing in pain. br br Her last words br Still ring in my ears.
