At 3 o'clock this afternoon br iright here in this ringi, br the poet will be wrestling br with his editor br until one of them br is pinned to the mat. br br Wrestling perhaps not br for the poem's soul, br which both profess to believe in, br but for its clothing. br br The editor sees br when a button is missing, br a vest does not br quite match the shirt. br br The poet just looks br and cries 'My baby! ' br He can't even glance br at the poem br without falling br forward to embrace it. br br Can we say that the poet br is the mother of the poem, br the editor its dad, br showing it how br to pull a collar up br to survive in a difficult world? br br Even so, they just can't agree br what's best for the poem, br so they're going to fight it out — br br circling each other in the ring, br the editor with his tough love, br the poet, heart on a sleeve.
