Margery Rehman - Far Away And Elsewhere.-A Poem For A Child.

Far away and elsewhere br Is a place we do not dare br To go alone br For there the leopard and the tiger br All the steamy hot day wander br Silently and soft of paw. br br Through the jungle thickets br You can hear the sound of crickets br Scir scirring in one's ear br And the caw caw caw br Of the parakeet br Telling us he is near. br br But when they silent fall br The trees loom close and tall br And menace seems to flow br As paths more tangled grow br For there is no place to go br But on into the jungle. br br Dark sullen silence all about br Only the drip drip drip from the leaves br Then all at once a noise breaks out br Monkeys jabber, cockatoos shout br Ear splitting shrieks resound br As every creature joins the fray. br br Only the great ape sits quiet in his tree br Amused by all this levity br Then stretches out one hairy arm br And swings himself into the air br From branch to branch with ne'er a care, br For he is lord of the jungle way up there.
