ivor or ivor.e hogg - Tea Time

My watch says four its time for tea br but I’m not where I ought to be. br Instead I’m stuck in this foul trench br amidst the mud and slime and stench br Rotting remains which used to be br young English soldiers just like me. br br My country called I volunteered. br My parents saw me off and cheered br They were quite proud to se me go br “To teach some manners to the foe” br But now the smoke and gas has cleared br I’m on my own just as I feared. br br Our forward trenches over run br I’m trapped behind the wily Hun br I would surrender if I could br but I cannot I’m losing blood. br I think my time is nearly done. br The only thing that I have won. br br A nameless grave like many more. br No one can calculate the score br of those who died on either side. br Involuntary suicide. br There are no winners in this war br a fact the generals ignore. br br I watch my life blood drain away. br Surprised to find I do not mind. br I will be pleased: I have to say. br to leave this rotten war behind. br A game I volunteered to play br I cannot stand another day br br The mud the blood and misery br which all around me I can see. br I leave behind without regret. br But I can see them clearly yet br My mothers friends all taking tea br I wonder if she’s proud of me.br br ivor or ivor.
