jerry hughes - AN AUSSIE SUMMER

The sun rises early. br 'Bloody daylight saving.' br Birds fly. Grasses grow. br The Victa's primed and br splutters to life. br br Johnny's off to play cricket. br Sarah's off to the beach. br Mum's making dinner. br Dad's mowing the lawn br and shooing off bees. br br Next door awakes after br an all night party. br 'Jesus, I'm still pissed' br His lament interrupted by br the flushing of the dunny. br br A dog barks. A blue-tongue br uncomfortable with strangers br waddles into the hydrangers. br br Midday. The sun's ablaze. br Mr Whippy's van circles. br Children run to it with br shiny coins and eyes. br The sounds of summer br punctuated by flies. br br Early evening. br The kids return. br Johnny scored eighty br and took two wickets. br Sarah's red and glowing, br not only from the sun. br br Mum's set the table br and prepared the tea. br Dad the silly bugger br was stung by a bee.
