Michael Shepherd - ! Threats and Opportunities

Here’s three cheers br for Jon Haidt, who’s reminded us br in ‘The Happiness Hypothesis’ br that our lingering primitive selves br respond more quickly to a threat br than to an opportunity… br br and thus, a more powerful emotional weapon br in the hands of politicians and journalists br and others with an axe to sharpen.. br while astute moneymakers, more than the rest of us, br look always for an opportunity… br br so President Bush hastens to warn us br that ‘Iran remains a threat’… br and so do you, George…and br so do bananaskins, and wet leaves br on a warming sidewalk after frost… br and polar bears to garbage cans - br themselves under our human threat br from global warming… br br It’s a world of threats, and threats of threats… br wars and rumours of wars, as the good book says… br maybe I should stay in today…but then… br was this, then, how the West was won? br I think not… br br Some say, still say, that somewhere out there br there’s One who made a world br entirely of opportunities… br br Meanwhile, pity politicians br in a world of spin: br if Dubbya-doh came out tomorrow br all bright-eyed and Bushy-tailed (by security men…) br and announced in upbeat tones, br ‘Iran remains a golden opportunity…’ br we’d all turn to each other and say, br ‘What’s he up to, then? ? ’ br and oil shares would fluctuate...
