ANDREW BLAKEMORE - The Old School Gate

ANDREW BLAKEMORE - The Old School Gate

The old school gate still stands here though br The school has long since gone, br It stands amongst the hedgerow now br And opens for no one, br The school gate leads to nowhere br No one passes through it now, br And it remains so firmly shut br Yet it survived somehow. br br Although its frame is rusting well br And crumbling away, br It stands there as a symbol of br A long forgotten day, br A small estate of houses where br The classrooms used to be, br The playground too has vanished now br It breaks my heart to see. br br So many times I'd waited here br So many times passed through, br I close my eyes and can recall br The times that I once knew, br The parting and the welcoming br I held my mother's hand, br Beside this gate in front of me br That can now barely stand. br br So sad to see it in this state br So many years gone by, br Yet while it lasts my dreams survive br And memories will not die, br The faces of the teachers br And the faces of my friends, br The sight of children playing there br Yet here is where it ends.
