Michael Shepherd - ! Orfeo

Michael Shepherd - ! Orfeo

Orfeo shone. br He shone as music shines. br br His shining, not the beauty of his radiant body; br it was the shining beauty of his humility. br br And his humility – sometimes like gold, br sometimes like purest, deepest Maryblue - br the colour where the sky meets with infinity, br meets with eternity. br br His humility, like hers, drew all things good: br and as you walked with him, all things were good: br the mountains, trees, and rocks and stones – br all things that do not move and cannot smile, br sang music to the heart, which smiled; br br all moving things were drawn to him: br the wildest and most murderous beasts, br and beasts that look like men, or men like beasts; br some like vegetables that move… br br all came to him, rubbed their heads against his legs, br licked his hands (were there the scars of wounds?) : br licked his feet (there too, the scars?) : br br it was his fragrance that they recognised: br in the memory of these wildest beasts br deep in ancestral bones, the memory br of Adam’s fragrance, when he named each beast. br br That fragrance is humility: that draws br the music of all things in heaven and earth: br draws heavenly space, and mountain air, br and fire of Sun itself, and water sparkling br as it springs from rocks; br the fragrance of fresh-turned, rich earth; br br Orfeo shines. br he shines – as music shines. br br * br br { from the treatise on the humble man br by Isaac of Nineveh, c.
