Nkululeko Mdudu - A Bittersweet Retreat

Nkululeko Mdudu - A Bittersweet Retreat

I’m cornered by lightning br So frightening! I’m shaking, br Just waking from afternoon napping. br Still mapping, still seeing them clapping… br But flashing and bashing br Of bold bouncing bolts of burden; br br Sighs within the skies br Drumming loudly, telling lies! br Can no one, anyone br Under a shaded sun br Stop this rattling rogue thunder? br br DUDDUMM….DUDDUMM…DUMM! ! ! br br Cracking like corn in the fire, br But much, much higher br Than rolls of smoke; br Then smashing the air br With hostile whipping, whipping and weeping br br Oh here comes the rain! ! ! br br Sweet as the melting flowers br Of moonlight in broad daylight. br Warm with winter’s absence, br Each drop; is incense br To the soul and essence br Of the mother tongue of earth. br br Sweet tasting, tender touch br From volatile valleys across the sky br br Let the rain come! ! ! br br Let it fill the dams br And dusty streams br No more sunny themes br But later, for the sun it seems. br br Let it cover the oceans br And rivers; with shivers br Running wild! ! ! br Let it melt the sorrows of my child.
