Linda Winchell - 'Air Raid Shelter'

Linda Winchell - 'Air Raid Shelter'

At one time there were air raid shelters br they were in everyones back yard, back then. br And in schools they would hold air raid drills br where children would go through steps br if only just pretend. br br We were told to kneel down on the floor br and place our hands atop our heads. br I remember thinking how stupid we all looked br and I would rather be outside playing instead! br br Then a siren would announce, 'ALL CLEAR! ' br Where we would all return back to our rooms. br We all were sorta looking forwards to one day br hearing a bomb go, BOOM! br br How little did we know back then br that these drills came from a war that had just won. br But to children never experiencing this br to us, was just like recess war game fun! br br I'm glad that our children, don't have to go through what we did br no air raid shelters or those scary drills. br And the most they will ever experience br is torando and maybe a spontaneous, monthly fire drill. br br Most all of air raid shelters built br have been filled in with rocks and soil. br With the hopes that we Americans br will never experience a war on American soil.
