C Richard Miles - Treasured Memories

She peers inside her jewel-box once more br But sees beyond the riches that it holds: br The dazzling diamond brooches may dismay br And sparkling sapphire clusters fail to satisfy. br Even emeralds, once elegant, are evanescent now br And gold has lost its glamour, silver’s shed its sheen br But, still, inside that casket hide more precious gems: br Though it has faded and has lost its mate, like her, br That single pendant earring with that artificial pearl br Brings memories of days long gone when first they met br Before they wed when, at the village post office, br He drew the entire contents of his savings book br To pay the pawnbroker for trinkets in the sale. br And other treasures soon transpire beneath the fluff br That has accumulated in the grimy depths: br A twisted, battered bracelet that her mother always wore br And that baby-tooth near disintegrating now br That was her first-born’s. Why does he never ring? br But then, that doesn’t matter, as she fondly smiles br And closes down the tattered tortoiseshell lid br And pats the peeling lacquer one more time br Protecting irreplaceable possessions deep within.
