Herbert Nehrlich - Browns Into Greens

The worm had made it, br evaded all controls br arrived, fresh and alert br and looked around. br They'd placed him there, br among the lettuces and leeks, br a thousand acres of fine greens, br oh, he would thrive and stay alive! br Midmorning came, the little man br turned on the water, a fine mist br to freshen up the greens, br it caught him unawares, he fell, br was swept onto the vinyl floor br where fibers of a giant mop preside. br By afternoon he found himself, br in sorry state of health and mood, br inside a drain behind the store. br Surrounded by a thousand acres of br gray soapy scum and pastes of dirty brown. br It was, he mused, the way of things, br and he would now perceive all browns as greens.
