Max Reif - Poem of Listening

Max Reif - Poem of Listening

1. br br I came to the place of listening, br Where I heard a terrible thunder br And rumblings of great chaos. br br Frightened, I wanted to leave br But a soft voice said, 'Please don't.' br br For a long time after that br My ear could discern only sobs br Till finally, Silence came. br br 2. br br A mouth appeared in the darkness, br Crying, “I am the voice of the Heart! ” br From the mouth came forth br A drop  of sparkling light br That was also a golden note. br br The drop  became a world br Which began to unfold a Story. br br 3. br br As I watched and listened, it led me br Down through history's chasm, br Back to the dawn of Creation. br br I saw the first man, the first woman br Clothed in their naked love. br When they turned to show their faces, br I saw that each had my own face! br Reaching out their sinuous arms br They pulled me into themselves. br Then for eons, unreflecting, br I lived their pristine life. br br 4. br br Suddenly, even First Forms br And Faces were stripped away. br br I flowed as the rhythmic i boleroi br Of life from the very beginning, br The Music of the Soul, br br A procession of colorful garments br Woven, re-woven from fibers br Of ones that had just been discarded, br Millions of melodies' garments br Of tumult and peace alternating, br All possible permutations. br br At last, I re-dressed in my own threads. br The Night of Tales was over. br I returned to myself as I had been — br But clean as a new Creation.
