Dónall Dempsey - ' ' ' ' ' THE SMELL OF SAUSAGES(for Helen)

I floated br to the ceiling br br & stuck there br like a Christmas balloon br br then I slowly br drifted br br through the open window br br startling br a passing starling br br amazed at a human br invading his space. br br There was a silly smile br on my face. br br My other body br lay on the bed br br wrestling with a temperature br of 103 degrees. br br There was I br & there was me br br both of br us br br in this br together. br br I swimming br through the air br br getting caught br in the gossamer br br strands of bird song br br clinging on to me br like cobwebs br br while the real me br who appeared to be really ill br burned br alive br br in br himself. br br The smell of sausages br ran up the stairs br br as I faded br into a wallpaper rose br br dissipated br like a ghost br br amongst br the dust motes br br crying for the coolness br of my big sister’s flannelled hand.
